7 Modest Tips to Increase Your IQ

IQ can be raisedKeeping a fit mind is like keeping a fit body: there are no reliable gimmicks or shortcuts. Health comes down to daily lifestyle choices, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and being judicious with french fries and six packs. IQ, just like weight, begins with the little choices. Continue reading “7 Modest Tips to Increase Your IQ”

Duct Tape Solutions for the Mind

Last week I had the honor of speaking with about 200 wonderful students at Northeastern Community College here in Colorado. We discussed important things, like why the mind is willing to jump through too many hoops for a free cookie. During a lively Q&A, one student asked my opinion on sleeping pills. How does a person know when medication is the proper way to treat sleep difficulties? Continue reading “Duct Tape Solutions for the Mind”

Five Reasons Why Marijuana Is a Real Jerk Sometimes

pot_is_a_jerkHere in Colorado we recently legalized recreational marijuana. I think that was a good decision. Grownups don’t need babysitters, and on my list of societal ills pot falls somewhere between stray dogs and people who drive slowly in the fast line. Who Do You Want To Be In Ten Years?

Happy New Year! When I was about 26 years old, I was offered a tattoo as a gift. This particular tattoo would have conveyed the type of thrilling message that young men imagine they will want emblazoned across their rippling biceps until the end. I planned to go out in a blaze of glory, rescuing women and children, and that tattoo was going to look great! Continue reading “Who Do You Want To Be In Ten Years?”

How to Overcome Laziness

laziness.jpgWe all have those lazy days we look back upon with regret. Today, for example, I donated a paltry four hours to the animal shelter, wrote only two chapters of my book on pre-Renaissance psychiatric interventions, and barely finished reshingling my roof. Some days I just can’t get myself moving. Continue reading “How to Overcome Laziness”

How to Turn Habit into Discipline

Turn habit to disciplineQ: If I feed my brain with a certain positive thought every time it wanders in a negative direction, does it eventually believe the thought? For example, suppose my mom tries to stop me from playing video games by telling me that it wastes time. My mind doubts her, and and I have thoughts that she’s just being overly protective. But if I keep repeating to myself that she’s right, would my mind eventually believe it and have no more doubts? – Michele Continue reading “How to Turn Habit into Discipline”

Our Representatives Are Ensuring Another Newtown

voteOur elected officials have no meaningful incentive to prevent another murder committed by someone with severe mental illness. It’s not that they want these crimes to continue, but politicians are compelled to do things that will keep them in office. Unfortunately, the behaviors that maintain their power are sometimes very different from the behaviors that would solve problems. Continue reading “Our Representatives Are Ensuring Another Newtown”

Should I Take Antidepressants?

antidepressants may not be the answerI’ve been considering asking my doctor for antidepressants, but I’ve heard that they are no better than placebos. What do you think? Do antidepressants work, or should I opt for the sugar pill? – BD Continue reading “Should I Take Antidepressants?”

Does DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) Cure Borderline Personality Disorder?

Q: While we’re bumping up awareness for borderline personality disorder (BPD), perhaps you could help us understand dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). I’ve heard that it’s the only effective therapy for BPD, but I don’t know much about it. I’m often skeptical of magic bullets, and I’m wondering what your take is on this. Thanks! -Ariel P. Is Borderline Personality Disorder a Real Condition?

Q: What’s your take on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)?  I ask because the newly committed H.R. 1005 would create a “BPD Awareness Month” (May, I believe) during which, apparently, the public would be educated about BPD by the federal government in a manner deemed fitting by Congress. As an acute propagandophobic, I’m already starting to break out in hives. Some straight talk from the IS could be just what the doctor ordered. – Fuzzy Continue reading “Is Borderline Personality Disorder a Real Condition?”
